Senior Moving & Downsizing in NH | Smart Move

Calm, hands-on support for a senior move or downsizing, sorting what travels and what does not, all on the family's rhythm with our own crew

Downsizing presses on a family in ways the carton count never shows. A home has carried a parent’s decades, the moment has come to settle Mom into something smaller or a senior community, and the hard calls, what travels with her, what the children keep, what gets sold off or given away, land on adult kids who never expected to be the ones deciding. Smart Move has been doing these moves since Cole launched the company back in 2014, and the crew arrives understanding the day carries weight no scale would register. We keep to the family’s rhythm, whether the move runs from a Rye home to an Exeter senior community, from a South End rowhouse over to a daughter’s place in Dover, or into storage while everybody settles what makes the cut.

What stalls people is the deciding, not the carrying, and we move through it with nobody rushing: which furniture truly suits the smaller layout, which pieces the children would like, what belongs at an estate sale or a charity, and whether the leftovers ought to sit in storage while the rest gets settled. We size up the new home ahead of time, so a beloved dresser does not ride clear across the Seacoast only to wedge at a senior-apartment door. For anything given away or sold rather than kept, we set up the drop, with a buyer, a family member, a charity pickup, so nobody is herding three trucks on one busy morning.

On move day each item earns equal care, the grandmother’s hutch and the tired recliner bound for charity right alongside. We blanket and shrink-wrap the furniture, break down and rebuild whatever needs it at the destination, mark the boxes by room, and roll out floor runners. Plenty of these moves finish at a senior community or care home, where the office asks for an insurance certificate, a reserved parking spot, and a booked elevator for the unloading slot; we settle every bit of that straight with their staff, sparing the family the runaround. A single crew carries the whole thing, opening lift to final one, with nobody new rotated in midway.

Should the family need belongings kept while the house finds a buyer or the next place gets chosen, the leftovers can sit in our short-term, climate-controlled storage until a date locks in. Want the home cased up beforehand so no one is boxing a parent’s kitchen at the last minute? Our full packing service handles that, on our truck with the very same crew start to finish.

Lay out for us where matters stand today and where they have to land, and we shape the entire plan around the family. Get a written quote and we will respond within one business hour.

What Portsmouth Movers Say

“Booked these guys for our condo near Market Square and it went fine overall. Kayla had the elevator reservation and the COI squared away with the building manager before the date, which I appreciated, and the crew was careful with the corners in that narrow hallway. Knocked off a star only because they ran about thirty minutes behind the morning window and I had to text twice for an arrival time. Once they got there, though, the whole thing moved fast and the quote held to the dollar.”

“We have one of the old houses in the South End, no driveway, one-way street, the works, and I figured moving day would be a nightmare. Tyler walked the route first, figured out where the truck could legally sit, and his crew threaded our furniture out the front without a single ding on those old door casings. Honestly the best money we spent on the whole sale.”

“Couldn't be happier. Two-bedroom over near Atlantic Heights, the boys had us loaded and unloaded in half a day and the flat rate was exactly what Cole wrote down. No sales tax in NH and no surprise fees from Smart Move, so that was a good day all around.”

Service FAQ

Clearing a parent's home has us frozen. Can you help us sort it?

Yes, and without steering you one direction or another. We talk through what suits the smaller layout, what the children are keeping, what belongs at an estate sale or a charity, and what sits in storage while the house finds a buyer. We size up the new home first so nothing rides over twice, and the family keeps control of the pace.

Can you deliver some pieces to family or a charity rather than to us?

That is frequently the whole assignment. We coordinate the drop with the family member, the estate buyer, or the charity pickup, measure each receiving door and stairwell beforehand, and carry it over on our own truck with our own crew. One organized move in place of three separate trucks crossing paths the same morning.

It is moving into a senior community. Will you deal with their forms?

We will. Most communities call for an insurance certificate, a reserved parking spot, and a booked elevator for the slot. We coordinate the timing and the paperwork with the office directly, so no family member has to track it down, and the arrival lines up neatly with the building's requirements.

Can you keep things while the house finds a buyer?

Yes. The leftovers can sit in our climate-controlled storage for weeks or months as the family figures out where things belong or holds out for a sale. We wrap it, log it, and hold it level on temperature and humidity, then bring it back on a day you pick, aboard our own truck.

Does a single crew take the whole move?

Yes. Whoever wraps and loads at the first home is the very same team that sets it all down at the new one, with nobody new rotated in midway. On a move that means this much to a family, you deal with the same trained people from the opening lift right through to the last.
